'Phenomenology and Virtue Ethics' Call

We seek original essays that focus on virtue ethics within the phenomenological tradition or utilizing the phenomenological method. Although virtue ethics is a tradition that is well suited to the depth descriptions of phenomenology, it remains largely unthematized in the current literature on phenomenology. The volume we are putting together will begin to fill that gap in the phenomenological literature. There is a rich diversity of topics in virtue ethics that can be pursued from the perspective of phenomenology, such as: the need for proper character dispositions (courage, humility, justice, etc.); the fundamental quest for fulfillment (eudaimonia), which itself opens up a meditation on the bodily, environmental, social and intellectual excellences; the role of moral exemplars, the dilemmas of ignorance and incontinence, etc.

  • In addition to essays doing historical work, we are looking for essays taking a systematic approach or a practical approach (i.e., using or applying the phenomenological method). Final essays should be approximately 7000 words long, including notes.
  • The tentative working title of the volume is Phenomenology and Virtue Ethics. We anticipate the volume being published through Continuum International Publishing Group as part of the series, Issues in Phenomenology and Hermeneutics (co-edited by one of the volume's editors).
  • Dates: Extended abstract (400-800 words) or completed paper due January 6, 2012. If accepted, your final essay will be due in July, 2012.

Send your abstract or essay in one file, accompanied by a second file with your name, affiliation, and contact information as well as a brief list of publications (suitable for a "notes on contributors" page) to the editors: Kevin Hermberg (kevin.hermberg@dc.edu) and Paul Gyllenhammer (gyllenhp@stjohns.edu). All files should be sent in .doc, .docx, .rtf, or .pdf format as email attachments. Please address any questions to Kevin or Paul at the email addresses provided.

IHSRC 2012: An international conference in Montreal

We are pleased to announce that the "International Human Science Research Conference" will take place this year in Montreal, at the Université du Québec à Montréal, from June 25th to 29th 2012. For 30 years, this annual international meeting has brought together people who are interested in or are working from a phenomenological perspective. The aim of the conference is to gather researchers from different human sciences, mostly from psychology and applied human sciences, but also from philosophy, to explore a theme. This year, the proposed theme is: "Renewing the Encounter between Human Sciences, the Arts, and the Humanities". Some of the keynote speakers will be Ms. Donna Orange, Mr. Georges Leroux and Mr. Jacques de Visscher. For more information, please visit our website:
